Lake and Amphitheatre Renewal | Project Progress

Construction works for the UQ Lake Amphitheatre Renewal are progressing with dewatering of the lake complete, despite the wet weather experienced, and mass soil mixing commencing next week.

The site location and impacts to pathways, roads and bicycle lanes is shown on the attached site map.

This project is expected to be complete in early 2023, a timeline can be found on the project website.

Affected Areas

• Pedestrian and cyclist pathways are closed for the entirety of the works. Refer attached site map for alternative routes.
• Traffic control will be in place on Jocks & College Road to manage vehicle movements
• The UQ neighbourhood / community can expect a level of odour to become present as the lake is dewatered and stabilised.
• Road closure at corner of College Road & Thynne Road. Access to Colleges via College Road and access to P11 via Thynne Road.
• Traffic control on College Rd, Jocks Rd and Staff House Rd to manage construction vehicle deliveries / access.

Work details
11 July 2022 – 17 July 2022

• Lake Works
  • establishment of mass soil mixing equipment on College/Thynne Road. Traffic control will be on site to manage construction vehicle access on College Rd.
  • construction of southern lake gate access, refer image below. Construction vehicle access required from Staff Road. This will have intermittent impacts to pathways near General Purpose South.
• Amphitheatre Works
  • continue topsoil strip and commence bulk earthworks.
  • expect noise from construction vehicles accessing site via Jocks Rd.

18 July 2022 – 24 July 2022

• Lake Works
  • continue mixing of soil within the lake, requiring multiple truck deliveries daily.
  • tree clearing southern / western lake edge requiring access from Staff House Rd.
• Amphitheatre Works
  • bulk earthworks and levelling of new design surfaces and construction of footings / retaining walls.
  • expect noise from construction vehicles accessing site via Jocks Rd.

The iconic UQ lake and amphitheatre is being transformed into a self-sustaining ecosystem that offers habitat for wildlife and more opportunities for people to enjoy the area.
