Lake and Amphitheatre Renewal: Project Progress

Construction works for the UQ Lakes Renewal and Amphitheatre Upgrade Project are progressing with mass soil mixing continuing in the lake and structural concrete works progressing in the Amphitheatre.

The Site location and impacts to pathways, roads and bicycle lanes is shown on the attached site map.

This project is expected to be complete in early 2023, a timeline can be found on the project website.

Affected Areas

Roads, Footpaths and Cycleways:

  • Pedestrian and cyclist pathways are closed for the entirety of the works. Refer attached site map for alternative routes.
  • Road closure at corner of College Road & Thynne Road will be in place until the end of the project. Access to Colleges via College Road and access to P11 via Thynne Road.
  • Traffic control will be in place on Jocks Road & College Road to manage vehicle movements as required.
  • Increased construction vehicle movements on College Rd continuing the end of September with 4-6 cement truck deliveries expected per day.

Noise & Odour:

  • The UQ neighbourhood / community can expect a level of odour to become present as the lake continues being stabilised.
  • Noisy works expected the week of the 19th of September for removal and mulching of trees.

Work details:

5 September 2022 – 11 September 2022

  • Lake Works
    • shallow mixing of soil within the lake; and
    • partial removal of a section of the boardwalk and removal of the fountain.
  • Amphitheatre Works
    • bulk earthworks and levelling of pavilion area;
    • stormwater upgrade works; and
    • continue structural walls for staircase and amphitheatre seating.

12 September 2022 – 18 September 2022

  • Lake Works
    • shallow mixing of soil within the lake
  • Amphitheatre Works
    • stormwater upgrade works; and
    • continue structural walls for staircase and amphitheatre seating.

19 September 2022 – 25 September 2022

  • Lake Works
    • shallow mixing of soil within the lake; and
    • mulching of cleared trees.
  • Amphitheatre Works
    • stormwater upgrade works; and
    • continue structural walls for staircase and amphitheatre seating.

The iconic UQ lake and amphitheatre is being transformed into a self-sustaining ecosystem that offers habitat for wildlife and more opportunities for people to enjoy the area. More information can be found on the project website.
