Lakes & Amphitheatre Renewal: Project Progress

Construction works for the UQ Lakes Renewal and Amphitheatre Upgrade Project are progressing well, with softscape and hardscape works continuing in both the lake and amphitheatre.

The Site location and impacts to pathways, roads and bicycle lanes is shown on the attached site map.

This project is expected to be complete in the Q2 2023, a timeline can be found on the project website.

Affected areas

Roads, Footpaths and Cycleways

  • Pedestrian and cyclist pathways are closed for the entirety of the works.
  • Road closure at corner of College Road & Thynne Road will be in place until the end of the project. Access to Colleges via College Road and access to P11 via Thynne Road.
  • Traffic control will be in place on Jocks Road & College Road to manage vehicle movements as required.
  • Staff House Road (near the intersection with College Rd) pedestrian footpath to be closed between 27 February – 1 March 2023 (refer to image 3 below)
  • Staff House Road (top) pedestrian footpath to be closed Monday 20 February 2023 (refer image 4 below).

Noise

  • Increased noise is anticipated to continue until the end of March 2023 due to paver cutting in the Amphitheatre (refer noise impact locations in below image 1); and
  • Excavator noise can be expected at the grassed area at the bottom of Jocks Road (beside the Lakeside Café) between Wednesday 22/02/23 to Friday 24/02/23, while the contractor installs electrical conduits (refer image 2 below for site setup).

Work details

20 February 2023 – 12 March 2023

  • Lake Works
    • earthworks and clay lining works expected to be completed during this period;
    • footings and structure for the new boardwalk continuing;
    • concrete pour for lake’s main inlet will impact pedestrian footpath along Staff House Road between 27 February – 1 March 2023 (refer below image 3 for location of pathway closures); and
    • outlet culvert works to commence.
  • Amphitheatre Works
    • sandstone paver installation continuing throughout the amphitheatre. Increased noise expected from sandstone paver cutting until end of March 2023 (refer Image 1 for expected noise impacts);
    • landscape softscape and hardscape works continuing; and
    • sandstone block deliveries to commence.
