UQ Sport Fitness Centre construction
UQ is building a new multi-level UQ Sport Fitness Centre as part of its 35-hectare Sport and Recreation Precinct at St Lucia.
During construction, there will be a number of parking, traffic and pedestrian changes in the area. Works will begin from 30 June 2025, with expected completion in 2027.
Affected areas
- The P10 Aquatic Centre Carpark is permanently closed.
- All vehicles entering and exiting the P10 UQ Centre and Synthetic Playing Fields Carpark must use Sir William MacGregor Drive. Vehicle access via Union Road is no longer available.
- Two accessible (PWD) car parks have been temporarily relocated to the front of the UQ Sport Aquatic Centre on Union Road. During main construction, these are expected to be moved to the P10 UQ Centre Carpark due to increased truck movements. Alternative PWD car parks are also available at the P10 UQ Centre and P10 Synthetic Fields Carparks. For alternative locations and maps, visit the accessible parking page.
- A section of the P10 UQ Centre Carpark will be allocated to Aquatic Centre customers.
- Direct pedestrian access from the P10 UQ Centre Carpark to Union Road, including the UQ Sport Aquatic Centre, has temporarily reopened. This access is expected to change in early August and signage will be in place to notify users.
- A section of car parks along Sir William MacGregor Drive will be closed when required as a truck loading zone. In addition, a section of red zone car parks along Blair Drive will change to 2-hour parking.
- There is limited access along Union Road, with one lane open using a stop/go arrangement. Traffic control is in place.
When
- From 30 June 2025, ongoing until 2027
- Work will be carried out from 6am to 6pm, Monday to Friday (Saturday works as required)
Details and mitigation
- We acknowledge the impact on people who park in this area and are reviewing parking options across the campus to optimise availability.
- A 5 minute passenger drop off zone has been introduced on Blair Drive for Aquatic Centre users.
- In the coming weeks, 15 red zone car parks on Blair Drive, located across the road from Aquatic Centre, will change to 2-hour parking to increase availability for customers. The hourly rate will remain the same.
- A section of the P10 UQ Centre car park will be allocated to Aquatic Centre users and signage will be put in place (please be aware this allocation may change during major events).
- Traffic control and signage will be in place as part of a traffic management plan to ensure the safe movement of pedestrians and road users.
- A construction management plan will be in place to ensure safety and minimise noise, dust, vibration and other disruptions as much as possible.
- Notifications will be provided to neighbouring buildings and UQ Sport members ahead of works commencing.
- As construction progresses, there will be changes to traffic and pedestrian access on Union Road. Updates will be published here and notifications will be provided to nearby stakeholders prior to these changes.
