Groundbreaking design
The Global Change Institute (GCI) building is an award-winning example of sustainable architecture, delivering a net zero-energy carbon-neutral space with natural ventilation, on-site solar panels and rainwater storage to service amenities and vertical gardens.
In 2015, the GCI building won the David Oppenheim Award for Sustainable Architecture and the National Award for Interior IT Architecture at the Australian Institute of Architects’ Annual Awards. In 2014, the GCI building received a 6 star rating from the Green Building Council of Australia.
Bookable spaces at GCI
GCI is open from 7.00am to 6.00pm, Monday to Friday. Weekend bookings are considered on a case-by-case basis. Priority is given to UQ Research and Strategic Government Partnerships bookings that align with the University's strategic objectives. Bookings are not accepted from external groups, individuals wishing to book social events or student clubs and activities.

How to book a room
- Confirm the room you want is available by using your Outlook calendar. If you don't know how to do this, follow the instructions for adding a room calendar. If you require further guidance on adding a room calendar, contact ITS for assistance in completing this step.
- Email your booking request to gci.roombookings@uq.edu.au. Telephone bookings will not be accepted.
- Your booking will be confirmed by return email.
Tentative bookings
Requests to 'hold' a room must be confirmed within 48 hours or the booking will be released.
Cancellations
Please contact gci.roombookings@uq.edu.au as soon as possible if your room booking is no longer required.
No bookings will be accepted in the last 2 weeks of December and the first 2 weeks of January.
Events
If your booking is for an event or function, review requirements listed on the Planning an events at UQ page to ensure you are well-prepared and have all necessary approvals. Event organisers may need to provide documentation to Property and Facilities (P&F). If you are unsure whether your event requires approval, contact the Events Approval Team at pfassist@pf.uq.edu.au before applying.
Additional furnishing and equipment
- Additional AV equipment must be arrange through Con-Sol.
- Additional tables and chairs are not available. Event organisers must source and arrange additional furniture if needed.
- If additional equipment is hired, the event organiser must be present to receive the delivery.
- Poster boards are not available. If needed, these must be provided by the event organiser
- Storage for additional goods and equipment is not available - a request to store in a nearby room, if not in use, will be considered.
After-hours access
For after-hours events, we will arrange your access with UQ Security. If you have trouble with access for your after-hours event, call UQ Security on (07) 3365 1234.
Please note that if your event concludes prior or after the expected finish time, the event organiser must contact UQ Security when your event concludes.
During your booking
Emergency procedures
There are emergency procedures guidelines located near the entrance to each meeting room. Ensure that attendees are aware of the correct path to emergency exits.
Computer and Wi-fi access
Guests can log into lectern computers using:
- password: lecture
- username: lecture
Guests can connect to 'UQ Guest' Wi-fi using a social login (Gmail, Facebook, LinkedIn).
Responsible use of rooms
- Music in the Atrium is generally not permitted during working hours (9am - 5pm).
- Do not move or unplug AV equipment. ITS will not provide assistance if equipment has been tampered with.
- Rooms are not soundproof and acoustic insulation is limited. Please refrain from creating excessive noise.
- Return rooms to their original layout.
- Remove all left-over catering, rubbish and rubbish bins. Cleaning fees will be charged if spaces are not returned in their original state.
- Erase all whiteboards.
- Return any additional chairs to the designated storage cupboards in each room.
- Do not sit or stand around the pond edge at the bottom of the green wall
Toilet access
Toilets are located in the adjacent Steele Building #3 (Levels 2 and 3). Access to the toilets is through the door (near the main GCI entrance) that joins both GCI and Steele Buildings. Please ensure this door is closed at all times as it is a designated fire safety door.
