The University and UQ Union (UQU) are working together on a staged redevelopment of the Union Complex at St Lucia.
Early works to refurbish Building 21C will begin in November 2025. The University and its contractor are working closely with the UQU to coordinate early works and minimise impacts as much as possible.
This page will be updated with information about any parking, traffic and pedestrian changes as works progress.
Affected areas
- Building 21C, Union Complex and surrounding areas (excluding the REDROOM and Building 21C lift which are open).
When
- Early works: From late November 2025 to mid-2026.
- Work will be carried out between 6am to 6pm, Monday to Friday (Saturday works as required).
Details and mitigation
Pedestrian access
- Pedestrian access to all three levels of the Union Complex will remain open via the Building 21C lift and stairs.
- There may be times when the stairs need to be closed temporarily, and pedestrian detours will be signed in advance.
- Access to the Building 21C lift and REDROOM will be maintained at all times.
- The stairs in front of the Schonell Theatre (level 2) will be closed and form part of the work site.
Parking and travel
- The motorcycle parking zone and reserved car parking zone outside Building 21C will be closed as these areas will become part of the work site.
- Alternative accessible (PWD) car parks are available at the end of Staff House Road or underneath the UQ Centre. For alternative locations and maps, visit the accessible parking page.
- End of trip facilities in 21C will remain open for the majority of works and notification will be provided ahead of a temporary closure in 2026.
- The open-air bicycle rack, bike repair station and bench seats outside the entrance to the Union Complex will be removed during the Stage 1 works. Visit Cycling at UQ for alternative bike racks and repair stations.
Construction management
- There will be increased truck movements via Union Road and Campbell Place.
- Traffic control and signage will be in place as part of a traffic management plan to ensure the safe movement of pedestrians and road users, in coordination with construction for the new Fitness Centre.
- Safety measures will include construction management plans, protective equipment, signage and barricades. Any asbestos-containing material will be wrapped before being removed from the building for disposal and managed in accordance with legislative requirements.
